Food Safety Audits are conducted for businesses with Licences from State Food Authorities.  General Food Safety Audits assess a business’s food safety program  (see link to NSW Program) for compliance with laws and regulations, as well as any other requirements of the relevant Food Safety Scheme set out in the Food Regulation governed by each state.   As we move towards a Global Food Standard all States of Australia and many countries are now adopting the ISO22000 platform as the new requirements. The Regulatory Food Safety Auditory System or third party audit systems that allows the Food Authorities to approve persons other than Food Authority employees to conduct regulatory food safety audits as a licensed business that meet audit performance benchmarks governs this function in most countries.   Inspections typically assess compliance with the general provisions of the Food Standards Code, particularly the Food Safety Requirements that include maintaining hygiene, temperature control, structural requirements and having adequate facilities. Inspections might be conducted in any sort of food business. They are sometimes conducted during investigations of food complaints and food safety incidents in response to market surveys or a regular inspection program. The specific audit and inspection requirements for various food industries are detailed under the appropriate industry and retail sectors and wider areas of healthcare, fast foods, etc. Commitment to a high level of compliance with the Food Acts and Regulations means that enforcement helps achieve effective management of food safety risks and the prevention of misleading conduct in connection with the sale of food.
